The “Rhino 300” initiative by Rhino Group is a visionary project to reclaim 300,000 acres of degraded land in Malaysia. Leveraging their expertise in organic fertilizer production and partnering with EMRO for advanced probiotic solutions, Rhino Group addresses Malaysia’s pressing agricultural challenges. Notably, the agricultural sector’s land use has expanded from 9.4% in 1961 to 26.1% in 2021 (World Bank), while its GDP contribution has declined from 8.3% in 2015 to 6.6% in 2022 (Statista).

According to a report from the New Straits Times titled “Healthy Soil Vital to Our Needs,” soil degradation poses a significant threat to agricultural productivity. The report warns that without effective intervention, global arable land may be depleted within the next 60 years.

Traditional farming practices, which contribute to soil degradation through soil erosion, nutrient loss, and biodiversity decline, underscore the urgent need for sustainable land management.

Rhino Group’s strategy involves developing organic fertilizers enhanced with probiotics to rejuvenate soil microbiota and optimize nutrient cycling. In collaboration with AptaMIER Lab, they conduct comprehensive soil assessments to guide the targeted application of these fertilizers, significantly improving soil health and productivity across diverse agro-ecological zones.

Community engagement is integral to the initiative, with Rhino Group actively facilitating capacity-building workshops and knowledge-sharing platforms to empower local farmers and stakeholders. This participatory approach not only rehabilitates land but also enhances livelihoods by boosting agricultural productivity and preserving biodiversity, which is vital for maintaining ecosystem services and resilience. Rhino Group’s vision is to create a greener Malaysia by restoring degraded lands. Through collaborative partnerships and proactive stakeholder engagement, the initiative is committed to protecting Malaysia’s natural heritage and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
